Exploring the Catskills Town by Town: Hudson & Catskill

A Local Guide to Hudson & Catskill, NY

If you’re looking for a day trip with a little more culture and a lot of charm, head east from the mountains to the Hudson River towns. Just under an hour from The Henson, the pairing of Hudson and Catskill makes for a perfect outing—Hudson with its thriving art, design, and food scene, and Catskill with its quieter, small-town creativity and riverside setting. Together, they capture the Catskills-to-Hudson Valley spirit at its best.

Hudson: Arts, Design & Dining

Hudson has transformed over the last two decades into one of the Hudson Valley’s most vibrant towns. Warren Street—the main artery—is lined with antique shops, design studios, independent bookstores, and art galleries. Whether you’re hunting for vintage finds, mid-century furniture, or contemporary art, Hudson delivers.

Food lovers will also find plenty to rave about. The town is packed with farm-to-table restaurants, bakeries, wine shops, and cocktail bars. For breakfast and lunch our top recommendations are Kitty’s and Little Rico and for dinner we love Rivertown Lodge and Manor Rock. Mel Bakery is the place for bread and pastries. And for something more casual and fun, head to Lil’ Deb’s Oasis, known for its colorful vibe and inventive dishes.

For antiquing, check out the Antique Warehouse and then stroll main street, hopping from shop to shop.

Catskill: Small-Town Charm on the River

Just across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge from Hudson, the town of Catskill has its own personality—slower, quieter, and a bit more under-the-radar. Its historic Main Street is lined with shops, cafés, and galleries, but with a much more relaxed pace than its bigger neighbor.

Catskill is also steeped in history: it was home to Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School of painting. The Thomas Cole National Historic Site is a must-visit, offering a glimpse into the landscapes and light that inspired America’s first major art movement.

For food and drink, we really like Hemlock for smash burgers and wonderful cocktails, as well as Casa Susanna for an upscale, modern-Mexican dinner.

Why We Love Them

We love Hudson for its energy—it feels like a crossroads of art, culture, and style. And we love Catskill for its balance—a walkable main street, river views, and a creative but unpretentious vibe. Together, they make the perfect river town duo: spend a few hours browsing galleries and shops in Hudson, then cross the bridge for a slower-paced afternoon in Catskill.
